The last two years have been amazing for JEM Ministries in El Paso, Texas and for the Ruiz family. In February of 2008 Maria Ruiz was nominated as a CNN Hero. Maria and her family were selected from thousands of nominees from all over the world. In April 2008, CNN aired three two minute segments of Maria and JEM Ministries. But, it didn’t stop there. In September Maria was nominated as one of CNN’s Top Ten Heroes. As a result, the ministry received $25,000 and Maria was honored at a black tie event at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood with many celebrities in attendance.

See the CNN Celebration.

But, the blessings from God didn’t stop. The Ruiz family were nominated and selected for an Extreme Home Makeover from the hit ABC show. The Ruiz family had been living in an unfinished two-story home in El Paso for years. They slowly did work on it over the years when they had the money. Most of their time, effort and money went into their ministry in Juarez, Mexico – just across the border. The building of a church and bringing food for thousands of hungry children in Juarez had been going on since 1996. Over the years their hose became structurally unsound and needed many repairs. In keeping with Extreme Makeover’s theme of “heroes”, the old Ruiz family home was torn down and a new one was constructed in one week.

See the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition episode.

But, things didn’t stop there.

The T.V. show “Viva La Familia”, aired on Spanish language network Univision, did a story on the Ruiz family and then surprised Maria and her husband Jesus with a second honeymoon for their 25th wedding anniversary.

Every local T.V. station in El Paso did a story on the Ruiz family and JEM Ministries.

Several national affiliates continued to do stories on Maria: Univision’s Tony Dandrade, Tenth Planet Productions, and CNN newsroom with Kyra Phillips, Primer Impacto, and Telemundo’s “Al Rojo Vivo”.

Jesus and Maria Ruiz were recognized as one of El Paso’s Top Healthy Marriages at the Vista Hills Country Club in El Paso.

The Ruiz family was invited to the National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast and Conference in Washington DC. Maria was presented with a “Certain Woman…Woman of Hope” award. The family also got to meet president Obama.

You see, when God pours out blessings He doesn’t do it halfway – He goes ALL OUT!

With all the publicity for JEM Ministries, much needed money was contributed, but still more is needed. They still need money for:

Here we go again. For several years now retailers have been reluctant us use the word “Christmas” in their advertising, opting instead for the word “holiday”. Christmas is so, well, religious. Who are they afraid of offending – Christmas loving Christians? Apparently Best Buy thinks it should embrace Muslims instead, with their Thanksgiving flyer that says plainly, “Happy Eid al-Adha”. I guess Best Buy thinks that will make Americans all warm and fuzzy and will take their family right over to their local store. Forget the fact that Muslims make up a tiny portion of the U.S. population. Perhaps they don’t want to offend Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood terrorist. Oops, I said a bad word, “terrorist”. Well, I’ll just say it again – Nidal Hasan is a terrorist who happens to be Muslim.

What I don’t understand is how this verse from Timothy 1:7 (from one of the high school’s banners) can offend anyone. “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.” But, appartently it did.

Christian parents are not being quite in this manner. In fact they have protested the ban by wearing “Warriors for Christ” T-shirts at the football games and showing up with posters of Bible verses.

A local youth pastor, Brad Scott, has set up a Facebook page and has organized a large rally in support of the Bible verse banners.

I believe the woman who protested about the banners is seeing much more publicity about them than before her protest. It’s heart-warming to see Christians stand up for their faith.

According to the Associated Press the Obama administration filed court papers Monday, August 17, 2009 claiming the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act discriminates against homosexuals. But, in a strange twist, the Department of Justice lawyers are trying to dismiss a suit brought by a homosexual California couple challenging the DOMA. The DOMA law states that the federal government will not recognize same-sex “marriage” and gives states the right to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. Obama has pledged to work to repeal the law.

Justice Department spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler said, “the administration believes the Defense of Marriage Act is discriminatory and should be repealed.” The DOJ reasons are because it prevents equal rights and benefits.

If we use president Obama’s and the DOJ reasoning, then you ought to be able to marry anyone, including a monkey! Sound ridiculous? So is same-sex marriage. God intended marriage to be between and man and a woman. And since America was founded on Christian principles, why aren’t we following them?

Reasons for the boycott:

The American Family Association (AFA) reports on their website that Pepsi continues to support the homosexual agenda despite being asked by the AFA to discontinue their support and just remain netural. Pepsi has refused and has made no effort to hide their support for homosexual activities.
The PepsiCo company continues to give financial support to homosexual organizations. The company gave $500,000 to Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and another $500,000 to the Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). The total of $1,000,000 was used to help promote homosexuality in the workplace. HRC and PFLAG were major supporters of efforts to defeat Proposition 8 in California, which defined marriage as being between a man and a woman. HRC gave $2.3 million to the effort to defeat Prop 8. PepsiCo also requires all employees to attend sexual orientation and gender identity diversity training where they are taught to accept homosexuality. And PepsiCo is a sponsor the TV program Family Guy which pushs the homosexual agenda and treats Christ in a derogatory manner. PepsiCo is a member of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. (Ford, McDonald’s and Wal-Mart withdrew from the NGLCC when asked to do so. PepsiCo refused). PepsiCo supports homosexual publications, which feature page after page of nude and semi-nude photos of men in suggestive positions, with advertising. PepsiCo, while promoting the homosexual lifestyle, does not give ANYTHING to help those in this destructive and unhealthy lifestyle, which is clearly the opposite of the what the Bible teaches. Romans 1:26-27, among other scriptures, condemns homosexual behavior as unnatural.

This is not just the AFA’s point of view or just my point of view. This comes from God! There’s going to come a time when all of us are going to have to answer for our actions - to the creator God. We as Christians need to speak up and voice our dis-satification with the homosexual lifestyle. Not because we hate them, because we love them.

As a conservative Christian you already know that you are being attacked for your Christian values, clearly outlined in the Holy Bible, by liberals. Recently conservative Liberty University, founded by Jerry Falwell, has come under attack for upholding these Christian values. What follows is a letter sent out by Jerry Falwell Jr.

“For nearly three decades, proud Americans like you have helped us grounded in the conservative Christian values that Liberty University was founded to support and defend. With the recent election of Barack Obama as president, radical left-wing activist groups are energized and seeking to use big government to mute the conservative voice. Few groups are more sinister than Americans United for Separation of Church and State and its misguided leader Barry Lynn.

Recently, Lynn, an ACLU lawyer turned reverend, seized on a fundraising opportunity when the university told a LU Democrat Club it could not use LU’s name and money in promoting some of its causes. The Democrat Club and its staff sponsor had refused to cut ties with the National Democratic Party, which supports abortion-on-demand and same-sex marriage.

LU thought the Democrat Club’s allegiance to the Democratic Party as a direct contradiction to core Christian values held dear by the university, which is both pro-life and pro-traditional marriage.

Lynn’s weapon of choice is the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, a federal agency which he often uses to pistol whip those who disagree with his radical, liberal political agenda.

In this case, Lynn’s assertion is that LU, in limiting the use of its name and money, had violated its non-profit standing. His goal is to have LU stripped of its tax exempt status by the federal government.

Personally, I find such assertions and petitions for federal involvement in curbing religious freedoms a disturbing trend as we move closer to a more instrusive and socialized federal government. in fact, AU’s actions are un-American. If a school like Liberty University can be required to endorse and support abortion rights and same-sex marriage, then how can we continue to call America “a free country”?

My father taught millions to stand and fight when they knew in their heart they were doing what was right. I think it’s time for Christian conservatives to stand up aganist left wing policital bullies like Barry Lynn. If we don’t stop him now, your church or your family could be his next political target. I hope you can send a financial gift of $15, $25, $50 or $100 to help us fight for the heart of America.”

God Bless You,

Jerry Falwell Jr.

I very much agree with what Mr. Falwell is saying. And I want it to be know that I am in no way afflilated with Liberty University, but I agree with their principles. If you see in in your heart to give to this university in their politicial fight, you can write them at the following address:

As a new believer, I was introduced to some children’s Bible songs like “Behold, Behold,” “The Lord is My Shepherd,” and “I am the Resurrection and the Life”. For many of them I didn’t even know I was singing Scripture. Later I would find the verse in my Bible reading and would be surprised I had already learned it.

Bible verse songs are a wonderful means of memorizing Scripture. When the words of the Bible are locked into the rhythm of a song, this makes it much easier to learn them. This is why songs on commercials are easy for children to remember. I can still recall advertising songs I learned as a child over 50 years ago!

Of course, the Bible is not written like poetry in a metric pattern, and thus it is more difficult to set it to music. Ways to do so successfully is the subject of another article. When it is accomplished, however, the meter of the song dictates the next word and locks it in.

Scripture memory songs not only help us memorize verses, they also help us remember the verses. When I am speaking, I often think of a verse set to music and am able to quote it accurately. In my mind, however, I am really singing the verse quickly. The rhythm of the song helps me retain the Bible words

Several years ago I taught third grade in a Christian school. Some of my students had difficulty learning the memory verse for the day and I wanted to help them. The answer was music. When I sang the memory verse to them, they could pick it up and remember it much more quickly.

Meditating on the Bible is also aided through music. As the song runs over and over in my mind, so do the words. Verses have come to mind in this way that were just what I needed for a given situation.

Since words of songs are often repeated, it is a means of even clarifying a verse. One example is 2 Corinthians 5:21 that contains a misplaced modifier in modern English. “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin” The verse is obviously not teaching that we are sinless but that Christ is. The meaning is clear; the song helped to clarify it for instruction.

Bible songs can present the Gospel in a way that is not offensive to unbelievers. One year for a parent meeting in our Christian school, I taught my class the entire Roman’s Road of verses and they sang them as their part of the program. The plan of salvation was presented to the audience in a way that was hard for any unsaved relatives to ignore.

The final advantage of Bible verse songs is their aid to those of us who are getting older. It is much more difficult for me to memorize Bible verses and remember them now, than it was when I was younger. But I can still remember a song and thus, music, for me, helps me learn and retain what I am learning.
